Pet homelessness is one of the biggest issues across the country. Every year, there are millions of healthy animals that are euthanized because they don’t have a home. While pet homelessness is a national problem, you can do your part by choosing to spay or neuter your pet. Any type of surgical procedure can be overwhelming, which is why the experienced team at Small Animal Medical Center will guide you through the process.

Preparing Your Animal for Pet Spaying or Neutering

The Week Before

The week before your pet’s surgery is a great time to bring your pet in for any additional testing that the veterinarian may need. This can include blood work, ultrasounds, and other types of diagnostic testing. In addition, you may want to bring your dog to the groomer a few days before surgery, as you will have to keep the incision dry throughout the healing process.

The Night Before

While pet spaying and neutering are standard procedures, each pet's preparation differs. It’s a good idea to ask your veterinarian some questions about what to do the night before. These may include:

  • Can my pet take their medication?
  • Should I let my dog exercise normally the day before pet spaying or neutering?
  • What time does my pet need to stop eating or drinking?

Additionally, the night before is the perfect time to prep your home for recovery. You will want to make sure there’s an area in your home for your pet to rest. If you have other animals in the home, you may make sure there’s a solid barrier to separate them. Setting up a crate can provide your pet with a comfortable space to recover. On the night before, make sure to wash all of their bedding to prevent the risk of infection.

The Morning of

On the morning of your pet’s spaying or neutering, it’s important to ensure that they don’t have access to food or water. In some cases, you may be asked to drop your pet off in the morning, as this gives the veterinarian time to perform any additional testing and catheter placement before the surgery. Before leaving the office, make sure they have your contact information to reach you with any updates on your four-legged friend.

benefits of pet spaying & neutering

While choosing to spay or neuter your furry friend will help to reduce pet homelessness, there’s also a range of medical and behavioral benefits. Check out the following section to learn more about some of the benefits.

Health Benefits

Spaying can help to prevent uterine increase and decrease the risk of breast tumors in female pets. In order to properly protect your pet from these issues, it’s best to spay your pet before their first heat cycle. In male dogs and cats, neutering is one of the most effective ways to prevent testicular cancer and reduce the risk of prostate issues.

Behavioral Benefits

Oftentimes, female pets will meow/bark and urinate more frequently during their heat cycle. This type of behavior is done to attract a male. Spaying your pet before their first heat cycle can prevent these behaviors from even starting.

During the breeding season, male pets will do anything to find a mate. Pets that are out roaming freely are at risk of being injured in traffic or in a fight with another animal.

Another annoying behavior is spaying. Oftentimes, male animals will do this to mark their territory, but it can leave your home smelling like urine. Neutering your pet is key to preventing these issues from starting. If done in the early stages, it can also help reduce aggressive behaviors.
